Marine

Corrosion-resistant fabrication for marine equipment

Seawater, salt spray and constant movement make material choice and weld quality critical on marine equipment. DMS can fabricate and weld stainless steels, Duplex and Super Duplex, and nickel alloys such as Inconel and Monel, for frames, pipework and components used at sea or on the coast.

The more we know about the operating conditions, whether submerged, in the splash zone or above deck, the better we can match materials and welding procedures to the job.

Send your marine enquiry with drawings and specifications.

Marine applications for our services

Our services are suited to marine items such as:

  • Equipment frames, housings and mounting steelwork
  • Tube and pipework assemblies for onboard systems
  • Flanged fabrications and pressure housings
  • Couplings and other circumferential components welded by machine TIG

If a part replaces an existing item, send photographs or the original drawing along with your requirements.

Choosing alloys for seawater and coastal use

In seawater, specifiers often move beyond 300 series stainless steels to Duplex, Super Duplex or nickel alloys. Our Duplex and Super Duplex procedures include comprehensive corrosion testing, and ferrite testing of welds and raw material is particularly important when welding Super Duplex.

Send the grade, the corrosion test requirements and any filler metal restrictions with your enquiry. See our approved materials.

Welding procedures and qualification

Where a project needs a procedure we do not already hold, we are prepared to qualify welders for it. Allow time in the programme for procedure and welder qualification when this applies.

  1. Confirm the material grades, thicknesses and joint types.
  2. Check them against our existing welding procedures.
  3. Agree any new procedure or welder qualification needed.
  4. Weld and inspect to the agreed procedure.

Inspection, NDT and records

Welds are visually inspected in-house, with flexible borescopes for the inside of tube. Other NDT, including digital radiography, is carried out by an independent test laboratory.

If your equipment needs classification society approval or specific material certificates, tell us at the start so we can confirm whether we can meet them before we quote. Read about inspection, assembly and testing.
